The ANY Function in IBM SPSS Statistics
To improve your experience using IBM SPSS Statistics, the Version 1 SPSS experts have created various Tech Tips. This Tech Tip shows how to use the ANY function in IBM SPSS Statistics.
In IBM SPSS Statistics, you can work inside a single, integrated interface to run descriptive statistics, regression, advanced statistics and machine learning models. You can create publication-ready charts, tables, and decision trees in one tool. IBM SPSS Statistics is easy to use, provides analysis automation, comprehensive statistical tools, integration with open source, and help at your fingertips.
The ANY function is used to scan a variable for values. The ANY function can be used in the select cases procedure, or it can be used in the Compute dialog box to create new variables. For example, ANY (1, var1, var2, var3) returns a value of 1 if any of the specified variables have a value of 1; otherwise, it will return a value of 0. We can search across variables, or we can search within variables.
For example, we have data on type of home type and want to select cases where the home type is single-family (coded as 1), condo/townhouse (coded as 2) or mobile home (coded as 3). To select cases, go to the Data menu and choose Select Cases. Select the If the condition is satisfied button. Click All functions. Select ANY and move this into the main box. Create the expression ANY(hometype,1,3,4). Click Continue. You can choose to filter, delete or move cases to another dataset. Now, you have selected the cases that you need.
You could also create a new variable using the ANY function. To do this, go to the Transform menu and select Compute. Provide a new variable name. In the Compute dialog box, select All functions. Select ANY and move this into the main box. Create the expression ANY(hometype,1,3,4). Click OK, and you will have the new variable in your dataset.
